The part-time engineer left in the middle of that month.
Sameer had joined in April, three days a week, for a stipend and a promise of equity. He was good: fast, careful, a little silent. He came into the kitchen one evening with his bag already over his shoulder and said that he had been offered a permanent job at a bank.
"It's nothing to do with the bug," he said, too quickly.
"I know."
"It's just, I have a loan, Vikram. And I don't know if this..." He gestured vaguely around the flat, the crates, the door-table, the plant that was dying on the sill. "I don't know if this is going to be a company."
"Neither do I," said Vikram, and found that it was a relief to say.
Sameer looked at him for a long moment. Then he said, awkwardly, "I wrote the tests for the deletion path. They're in the repository. Don't skip them. I'm sorry to go."
They shook hands. After he left, Vikram stood in the doorway and listened to the lift. Then he went back to the desk, alone again, and began, deliberately, to read every line of code he had ever written.
