He slept for fourteen hours.
When he woke it was dark, and raining, and the flat smelled of onions frying. Neha was in the kitchen, humming something tuneless. He lay in bed and listened to her, and to the water against the glass, and for the first time in months he did not reach for the phone.
He did nothing for four days. He walked. He went to see his parents in Thrissur and ate until he was sleepy, and his mother, who did not know what a notebook app was, said only that he was too thin. He sat on the veranda with his father, who had been a bank manager and distrusted anything that could not be counted.
"What happened?" his father asked, at last.
Vikram told him. The bug, the email, the people who stayed and the ones who left.
His father was silent for a time. "In forty years of banking," he said slowly, "the clients I trusted most were the ones who told me bad news first." He folded his newspaper. "You did a very good thing. Eat something."
