They had it on the floor of the office, with chai and no chairs.
Lakshmi spoke first. "I could use eight crores." She said it flatly. "I have a mother in a hospital. I'm not going to pretend otherwise." She paused. "But I joined a company that says in red marker over the door that it does not read what people write. If we sell, that sentence is someone else's to keep or break."
The third engineer, a quiet boy called Arjun, said, "I think we'd get a lot of money and a very short list of things we're allowed to say."
Vikram listened to all of them. Then he said what he had been rehearsing for three days. "I want to make us a promise, all four of us, Neha included. If we ever sell, it is to someone who signs, in writing, that they will not read the notes. And if nobody will sign that, we do not sell."
There was a long pause.
"Then we are not selling this month," said Lakshmi, and smiled for the first time all week.
On Friday he wrote to the large company a polite email, two lines long, saying that he would be glad to talk if they were willing to put a single sentence in the contract. They never replied.
