The team that season was six paying climbers and three guides.
There was an Australian surgeon called Helen, who climbed the way she operated, in silence. There were two brothers from Texas who bickered like men who loved each other. A retired schoolteacher from Lyon, Marc, sixty-one, who had saved for this for thirty years. A young woman from Mumbai called Anjali, quiet, determined, who had paid for it with a loan from her uncle and hadn't told her mother. And Peter, a thin, nervous German with a very expensive down suit who had never climbed above four thousand.
Tashi studied them as he always did, in the first week: who walked too fast, who too slow, who drank enough, who was frightened and hiding it. Anjali was the one he noticed. She watched everything. At the end of the second day she asked him, quietly, how he knew when to turn back.
"You turn back before you want to," said Tashi.
"And if you're wrong? If you could have made it?"
"Then you live," he said, "to be wrong again."
