The summit window opened on the twelfth of May, with a forecast of two clear days and a wind that would drop after midnight.
At Camp Four, on the South Col, eight thousand metres, in a wind like a freight train, they sat in tents and ate nothing and drank melted snow and waited for night. Anjali was awake, her eyes huge in the dim light, her breathing quick. Helen was reading a paperback with the page against her mask. Peter lay on his back, not moving, a sound in his chest like a wet bellows.
"He should go down," said Tashi quietly to Dorje.
"He'll be fine."
"His lungs..."
"Tashi." Dorje looked at him in the light of the headlamp. "He paid forty thousand dollars. He wants it. We are professionals. We help. He goes slowly, we stay with him."
It was, Tashi would reflect, a perfectly sensible plan. It was the plan he would have made himself. It was the plan that killed his friend.
