She came to find him, in the end, in the autumn.
He was cutting wood behind the house, and she walked up the track with her daughter's hand in hers, looking smaller than she had in the spring. He put down the axe. They stood in the yard like two people at the edge of a river.
"I have been angry," she said. "I want you to know. I have hated you since the day you came."
"I know."
"I think I would have hated anyone." Her voice was steady. "Dorje went up the mountain every year. I told him a hundred times to stop. I told him, one day it will take you. He laughed." She looked at the peaks. "I think I needed someone to blame, and you were the one who walked up the road."
"Pema..."
"Let me finish." Her eyes were wet, but her voice did not break. "He would have gone back for the camera whoever had sent him down. It was him. It was always going to be him. He was the kind of man who could not turn around. It's why I loved him. It's why I could not forgive him." She breathed. "I am sorry that I let you think it was you."
