The number was on the screen in the bank's grey font, and Meera read it three times because it did not change. Four lakh twelve thousand rupees.
She opened the spreadsheet she had built in her first month and never looked at since, the one with a tab called RUNWAY. Rent for the room that served as an office. Cloud bills. Kabir's stipend. Her own salary, which she paid herself at half what she had earned at the bank. She typed the new balance into the first cell and watched the formula spit out a date.
Ninety days. Not a feeling, not a fear, a date.
The app was called Thali. It helped small kitchens, tiffin services and canteens plan what to buy, what to cook and what to throw away. It had two hundred users, nineteen of them paying, and one customer, a woman called Sunanda who ran a tiffin service from a flat in Pune, who had written to say it had changed her life.
Meera saved the spreadsheet. She wrote Day 90 on a sticky note and put it on the monitor, where she would have to look at it.
