Kabir was already in the office when she arrived, which was unusual. He did not look up from his laptop.
"I need to talk to you," he said, in the voice people use when they have rehearsed.
She put down her bag. She knew before he said it. She had known for weeks, in the way you know a tooth is going to hurt.
"My father found me a job," Kabir said. "A real one. Salary every month. Insurance." He finally looked at her. "I'm not leaving because I don't believe in Thali. I'm leaving because I'm twenty-six, and I am tired of eating instant noodles for dinner."
"When?"
"End of the month. I'll finish the inventory module. I'll document everything."
She wanted to say something dignified. What came out was, "You wrote the whole forecasting engine."
"I know."
"It's the only reason the app works."
"I know." He closed the laptop gently. "Meera. I'm sorry."
After he left, she sat very still. She had ninety days of runway and now, apparently, a single pilot.
