Kabir's last week should have been quiet. It was, instead, the best work either of them had ever done.
He built, in four days, a feature Meera had not known she needed: an import from the hospital's discharge list, a spreadsheet the ward sent out each morning. Raju's kitchen could now see tomorrow's numbers, roughly, before anyone cooked.
"It's ugly," Kabir said, pushing the laptop across the desk.
"It's the most useful screen in the product."
"Because it solves one man's problem."
"That's how all products start," she said. "One man. One problem."
He looked at her for a long moment, then at the sticky note on the monitor, then at the window, where evening was gathering over a row of tin roofs. "I keep thinking," he said, "that if I just stayed three more months."
"You'd be here for the ending, whatever it is."
"Yes."
"Then go," she said gently. "Go eat something that isn't noodles. Come back and tell me what it was like."
