A fire in the hospital kitchen was the first real crisis of her company.
Not a physical fire: a data fire. Raju called at six in the morning, calm and furious. The app had told him to cook for ninety patients, and only forty had been left in the ward. A hundred and ten portions of dal were in the bin.
Meera got on the first train to Hyderabad. On the way she ran the numbers on her phone in the swaying carriage, and found the bug within an hour: the discharge import had read the ward's spreadsheet in the wrong order. A column had shifted. It was a small error, the kind Kabir would have caught.
Kabir was at his new desk in a glass office. She called him anyway.
"Date format," he said, before she finished. "They changed it from day-month to month-day. Everything before the twelfth looks right. Everything after is garbage."
"Fix?"
"Two lines. I'll send it from the lift."
She hung up and watched fields go by in the dawn. She had learned that a product can be clever or it can be trusted. It cannot afford to be wrong in front of a man who has cooked for twenty-two years.
