The email from her mother arrived on a Friday, with no greeting. Call me when you can. Not urgent.
In Meera's family, not urgent meant it was.
She stepped out of the office into the alley behind the building, where the street dogs slept in the shade of a parked auto. Her mother answered on the second ring.
"It's your father," she said, without preamble. "He's all right. He had a small episode. A scare with his heart. He is at the hospital. They are keeping him two days."
"I'll come."
"No, no, don't come. You have your company." There was an old tightness in her mother's voice, an old pride, folded around the fear. "I'm telling you because you should know."
"Amma. I'm coming."
"Then come after the weekend. Finish whatever you must finish." A pause. "He asked about your business. He asked if you were eating."
Meera pressed her forehead against the warm brick. She had thirty-four thousand rupees in the bank beyond what the runway sheet called safe, and she had forty-five days. She bought the ticket that evening.
