A third of her time was gone. A third of her money, a little more.
She went for a walk, which she almost never did, along the edge of a canal behind the office where women washed clothes on slabs of stone. It was a cool evening. A boy was flying a kite from a roof. She watched the string, thin as a hair against the pink sky, and thought about how much of her life was now balanced on small threads.
Her phone buzzed. A message from Kabir, the first in two weeks.
How are you.
She stood still, looking at it. Alive, she wrote. Ninety to sixty. How is the glass office.
Quiet. Air-conditioned. I miss the noodles. Then, a minute later: I read about the outage. You handled it well. Do you want me to look at the pool configuration on Saturdays?
She smiled at the screen. Are you offering to work for free?
I'm offering to be bored on a weekend, Kabir wrote. Same thing.
