Imran signed on the eighteenth day. Not a trial, a contract: two years, a monthly fee that was bigger than all her other customers together.
She read the email twice and then closed the laptop and put her head on her desk, in the dim room with the stained ceiling and the sticky notes, and for a minute let herself feel nothing at all.
It did not solve everything. The money would arrive after sixty days, on his payment cycle, which meant she would still hit the thin place around Day 5, when the bank balance dropped near zero and she would have to decide whether to pay herself.
But the line had moved. The cash and revenue graphs no longer approached a crossing. They had, for the first time, begun to run in parallel.
Revathi came up with tea. "You look like a woman who has won something."
"Not yet." Meera lifted her head. "But I think I have won the right to keep losing slowly."
"That is all anyone wins," said Revathi, and put down the cup. "Drink it before it goes cold."
