She said no. She said it by phone, after a sleepless night, with Revathi's tea going cold at her elbow.
"I want to say no to the investment," she told Padma. "I want to say yes to the contract. I want to grow slowly and keep the decisions."
A silence. Then Padma laughed, a warm rough laugh. "I thought you might."
"You're not angry?"
"I am proud." She breathed out. "Meera. I invest in people who know what they want. I would rather be your customer for twenty years than your shareholder for five."
"Thank you."
"One condition." Padma's voice sharpened. "You hire someone to carry your server on weekends. I do not want my hospital kitchens waking at six to find a cold screen."
"Kabir offered."
"Then take him up." A pause. "And give him a share. A small one. He built the engine."
Meera looked at the sticky note on the monitor, curling at its edges. Day 90. Beneath it, a column of names in her own handwriting. It occurred to her that she had never once written the word investor on it.
