She was waiting for the lift when someone touched her elbow.
He was young, thin, in a crumpled shirt, with an ID badge turned round so she could not read it. "Don't look at me," he said, very low. "Look at the lift. I worked on your father's file."
"Who are you?"
"Dev. Junior hydrographer." The lift was slow. "He sent us a letter in April. A real one, on paper. He said the depths we gave him in our brief were wrong, that there was a shoal, and that a ship would hit it. We were told to ignore it."
"By whom?"
"By Krish." Dev's voice cracked. "I made a copy. I was too scared to do anything. It's in a locker at Churchgate station. Number 114." He pressed a small key into her palm. "They'll know I spoke to you. I'm going to leave Mumbai. Tell your father, if you see him, that someone listened."
"He's dead," said Isha.
The young man went white. The lift opened. "Oh God," he whispered. "I thought... I'm so sorry." He turned and walked away fast down the corridor, and did not look back.
