"I did not kill your mother," he said finally.
She had not spoken the thought aloud. It sat in the room like a third person.
"My predecessor ran the harbour contract in 1989. He told her the buoy was dragging. I believe he was lying. I never knew for certain." He rubbed his face. "When I found the old file, last year, I knew about the rock. I knew about Karimpara. I thought, a rock can be dredged. I thought your father would see reason."
"He didn't."
"No." Krish's voice was flat. "I commissioned the false sheet myself. I told my people to burn the harbour records. I did it because I'd already spent two hundred crore and I could not see how to stop." He looked at her, and what she saw in his face was not malice, but the empty exhausted look of a man who has talked himself into something. "I'm telling you because you've already won. I wanted someone to know it wasn't only greed. It was cowardice."
"It's both," said Isha. "It usually is."
