Raghu came to the guest house in the rain, alone, without his smile.
"Nirmala." He stood in the corridor with water running from his sleeves. "I think you have something of mine."
"I have a ledger belonging to the harbour."
"The harbour is mine." He said it simply, like an address. "My father built it. I keep it. I keep it safe."
"Safe from what?"
"From people who think the truth is worth more than a town." He looked past her at the page lying on the bed. "That was a long time ago. Nobody who did anything is alive. Nobody who knows needs to be hurt."
"Eleven men were hurt."
"And my father was not a murderer." The words came out cracked. "He made one bad call on one bad night. Then he spent thirty years rebuilding this place. You think I want to tear down all of that for a page of ink?"
She did not answer. In the long silence, thunder walked slowly across the roofs.
"Sell the shed," Raghu said, very quietly, "and go home."
