It was not a decision that either could make quickly.
They talked about it for weeks, in the back room, over tea. Meera had spent her whole life following a plan that was not hers, and she was not going to abandon the first thing she had chosen for herself. Dev had spent five years doing the same, and was not going to ask her to.
"I'm not saying no," she said, one evening, with the lamp low. "I'm saying I need to see it through. A year. The shop's mine, Dev, and I've never had anything that was mine."
"Bangalore's a night's train."
"Yes." She smiled. "I know. I looked."
He found that he was not afraid. The thing he had learned in the year off was this: that the road was not a ladder, one rung at a time, but something more like a river, with different banks, and a long way to run. He did not need to know how it would end. He needed to know that he was going toward something he actually wanted.
"I'll come on weekends," he said. "When I can. If you'll have me."
"I'll have you," said Meera. "On the condition that you bring a book I haven't read."
