Her father could speak again by the end of the week, but slowly, in broken pieces.
He sat in a plastic chair on the porch under a blanket in the hot sun, watching the pans. Mohan fed him dal with a spoon. Kavita read to him from the newspaper, and Jayesh drove into town for medicine. They moved around one another like people in a house after a death, careful, not touching.
On the fifth evening Dhanji said, "The man. Sethi."
"We told him we'd think," said Mohan.
"Think." The old man's good hand lifted and fell. "Think about what?"
None of them answered. After a moment Dhanji turned his face toward Kavita, and she saw that he knew, always had known, that she had read the letters. He did not mention them. He looked at her for a long time. Then, slowly, with great effort, he said, "Your mother. She hated the salt."
"I know," said Kavita.
"She stayed anyway." His eyes closed. "That is what a person does. Sometimes."
