The shop was not doing well. Ishaan knew that the way you know a tooth is rotting: constantly, and with a certain refusal to look.
His father had left him the stock, the lease and a loan from a cooperative bank that nobody mentioned. The rent rose every March. The online sellers had cut the margins in half. In the back room, in a drawer under a cracked mug, lay a green ledger with a column he had never added up.
Tara found it one afternoon looking for a pen.
"What is this?"
"Nothing."
"It is eight pages of numbers, Ishaan."
"It's what we owe."
She sat down on a crate and read it slowly, the way she read everything, with her finger beneath each line. When she reached the end she was quiet for a long time. Rain tapped on the skylight.
"It's not hopeless," she said at last. "It's just ugly. Ugly can be fixed."
"You sound very sure."
"I'm a designer. Ugly is my profession."
