They made the plan on the back of a till receipt, in July, in a downpour, with the shop shuttered and a thermos of ginger tea between them.
Three ideas. A reading corner at the front with proper light. A weekly evening, Thursdays, with someone reading aloud. And a subscription: a parcel of three books a month, chosen by hand, for people who lived too far to browse.
"It's the last one that will save you," Tara said. "People want to be chosen for."
"I don't know their tastes."
"You'll learn. You do it already, you just don't charge for it." She drew a small box on the receipt and wrote a price in it. "You can't survive on affection, Ishaan. Not the shop's, not mine."
He looked at the number. It was twice what he would have dared.
"What if nobody pays?"
"Then we will know," she said, "and it will be a different kind of ugly." She pushed the receipt toward him. "Sign it."
"It's a receipt."
"Sign it anyway."
