Tara did not tell him at once.
She came to the shop on the Wednesday after New Year's with an envelope she did not open, and for most of that day she was strangely bright, sorting biographies with great concentration, humming. In the evening she said, "I have something to tell you and I want you to promise to listen to the end."
"That's an alarming opening."
"Promise."
"I promise."
She sat down across from him, hands flat on her knees. "The studio has offered me a partnership. A real one. A share of the firm, a salary I don't know what to do with, and a project in Singapore for two years."
He did not say anything for some time.
"It's a lot of money," she said. "It would pay the bank. All of it. I could do that, Ishaan. I could do it in eighteen months."
"And you would be in Singapore."
"I would be in Singapore," said Tara, "and I would hate it, and I would pay the bank."
