She came on the night before the auction, in the rain, without an umbrella.
He opened the door and she stood on the step with water running off her chin, in a coat he did not know. Her face was blotched. She looked about twenty.
"I took the offer," she said.
He nodded slowly. He had known. "When do you go?"
"May." She stepped inside, and the bell rang its thin note, and she looked at the shop in the low lamplight as one looks at a face one is about to lose. "I want you to know I did not do it to pay the bank. They will take the shop regardless. The money would not have come in time."
"Then why?"
"Because I am good at it, and because I am frightened of what happens to a person who gives up the thing she is good at for a thing she loves." She was crying openly now. "I wanted to be brave. I discovered I am only brave at drawing."
"That's not true."
"It is a little true." She wiped her face. "Ishaan. I am so sorry."
He said nothing. He took the towel from behind the counter and held it out, and she took it, and neither of them moved.
